Call for Abstracts

THE 4th CONFERENCE OF THE

CHINA-INTERNATIONAL LEISURE RESEARCH ASSOCIATION

Urbana-Champaign, IL, USA

February 10-11, 2020

The China-International Leisure Research Association (CILRA) 2020 Conference is organized by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA and CILRA. The CILRA previously hosted three international leisure studies conferences in Beijing (in 2013), Tianjin (in 2015), and in Hangzhou (in 2016). The CILRA 2020 Conference is designed to provide opportunities to engage in theoretical and applied research related to broadly defined aspects of leisure in the context of China. With rapid economic development and urbanization in China, recreation and leisure became the critical elements in Chinese people’s daily life. Research on leisure behavior among Chinese population contributes to broadening the scope of leisure research, testing the existing leisure theories, and enhancing the development of leisure studies in a global context. Appropriate topics for a conference presentation include those connected to leisure studies, recreational sport and tourism that either takes place in China or among Chinese populations abroad.

The CILRA 2020 will be held in conjunction with The Academy of Leisure Sciences Conference (TALS 2020). The CILRA conference will be held from February 10-11 and TALS conference from February 11-14, 2020. We welcome scholars who are interested in Chinese leisure, recreational sport and tourism to submit abstracts to the CILRA 2020 conference and we invite all CILRA guests to register for and attend TALS 2020 conference.

Abstracts cannot exceed ONE page, single‑spaced (see detailed instructions below).

Abstract submission due date: September 16, 2019.

ABSTRACTS PREPARATION

  1. Abstracts will undergo blind peer review by three reviewers. The CILRA 2020 Conference Committee will make final decisions about abstracts’ acceptance.

  2. Authors of six abstracts who receive the highest scores during the review process and whose abstracts focus on leisure or recreational sport will be invited to submit full papers for publication in the special issue of Journal of Leisure Research on “Leisure and China in the Global Context.”

  3. Abstract should follow the following format:

    1. The authors should submit two language versions of their abstracts – English and Chinese. Please check the requirements for font and reference style of Chinese abstracts in the Chinese version of CIRLA call for abstracts.

    2. The English version should not exceed one page maximum. Abstracts exceeding this page limit or using condensed font will be returned without a review. The text of the abstract may not run over onto a second page.

    3. Abstracts should not have a cover page.

    4. Tables and figures may be included on additional pages.

    5. References should be included on an additional page and formatted according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th edition).

    6. An abstract should be submitted as one Word for Windows (not a PDF) file including the main body of the abstract (in English and Chinese), tables/figures (if needed), and references.

    7. Abstracts must include a title and appropriate subheadings (e.g., Introduction, Methods, Findings, Discussion/Conclusions). Abstracts reporting conceptual and theoretical discussions should also have an effective set of subheadings.

    8. Single space the text and use 12‑point font Times Roman and one-inch (2.54 cm) margins on sides, top and bottom.

    9. Track changes must not be visible.

    10. Abstracts should be anonymous. No information that would identify the authors of the abstract should be included in the body of the abstract, file properties, or the file name. Author identification should be removed from file properties (in Word, go to File, then properties, summary and remove author name).

    11. Abstracts that do not meet all specifications will be not be reviewed.

  4. Submission due date
    Abstracts are to be submitted electronically no later than September 16, 2019. Abstracts submitted after this deadline will be returned without review. Please upload your abstract and fill out all of the required information using this link:

  5. Submission process
    During the submission process, the authors will be asked to indicate the abstract authors, their institutional affiliation, and contact information.

  6. Acceptance notifications
    Authors will be notified of abstract review results via email in early November 2019.
